FinancingInsurance companies typically don't pay for LASIK surgery even in medically necessary cases. Almost always LASIK is considered to be cosmetic surgery by the Insurance carriers and since they don't usually pay for glasses or contacts, it is not their policy to pay for LASIK eye surgery.

We make every effort to maintain fees as fair as possible for laser vision correction. The cost of the surgery is largely due to the expensive technology behind the surgery. A typical laser costs more than a 4000 square foot home and the microkeratome is more expensive than a BMW. Also the laser companies charge a royalty fee for each eye that is done. The consumer should be aware that “you get what you pay for” applies to LASIK eye surgery probably more so than a kitchen appliance. Be cautious of centers that offer unbelievable low prices. Typically, it is either a “bait and switch” gimmick or even worse a “cutting corners” scenario.

The “bait and switch” scam or “a la carte” medicine goes something like this. You see the advertised price of $699 per eye, but when you get there you realize that in order to have custom wavefront LASIK it will cost $800 extra. If you want to have the laser that tracks your pupil then that is $400 per eye additional charge. Or to treat your astigmatism that will be $500 per eye extra. If you have dry eyes they may even try to charge you $600 per eye for a minor surgical treatment prior to your LASIK. So the total bill may be $1500 to $2800 per eye at the “ Discount Laser Center ”. This tactic pressures people into paying more, since who wouldn't want to have the best when it comes to your eyes?

As far as “cutting corners” some physicians have reused blades, not worn gloves, or used refurbished or non-FDA approved equipment in order to save on costs. Others will charge less while during their first 1000 cases, so they can learn the techniques more quickly. Don't let that happen to you!

Top-of-the-line custom wavefront LASIK at Wake Forest Eye Center's pricing is competitive at around $2000 per eye. If you think about, LASIK typically pays for itself in 4 years. Glasses typically costs $300 to $400 and need replacing every 2 years, prescription sunglasses are about $400, contact lenses and supplies typically cost $50 per month, annual doctor visits average $125, plus the hassle and risk of contact lenses.

Call us at 336-716-2305 for the current pricing. There are no other hidden costs. This price includes all follow-up by the surgeon for one year, touch ups, and most post-op supplies.
